It’s not just cities that are impacted by our housing crisis – the suburbs are struggling too. We’re organizing to pass Good Cause Eviction in the Town of Poughkeepsie to protect tenants from retaliatory evictions and extreme rent increases.
ABOUT GOOD CAUSE
WHO WOULD BE COVERED BY GOOD CAUSE EVICTION?
Each city can set specific criteria for who is covered by Good Cause, but based on laws passed in other Hudson Valley cities, a Good Cause law in Town of Poughkeepsie would likely cover tenants who:
- Live in a building built before 2009
- Rent from a landlord who owns more than 1 rental unit total
- Do not live in an owner-occupied building with fewer than 11 units
WHY TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE?
The Poughkeepsie metropolitan area has the third-highest housing costs of any region in New York outside of NYC. For the 30% of Town of Poughkeepsie residents who are renters, the high cost of living in Dutchess County has made housing costs unaffordable.
Renters are being priced out of Poughkeepsie, and Good Cause can help protect our community from displacement.
WHAT ARE GOOD CAUSE PROTECTIONS?
Guaranteed lease renewals: Rest easy knowing your lease or month-to-month tenancy renewal is guaranteed.
Challenge large rent increases: Force landlords to justify rent hikes more than 10% or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) + 5%, whichever is lower.
Protection from unjustified evictions: Landlords can’t evict without a ‘Good Cause,’ like nonpayment of rent or lease violations.
